Things Dogs Do That Are Actually Normal: A Guide for Paranoid Pawrents

Guide for Paranoid Pawrents

(And what you should know instead)

If you’ve ever looked at your dog and thought,

“Wait… is this normal?” - you’re not alone.

Dogs do a lot of things that can seem confusing, concerning, or just plain weird.

But the truth is, many of these behaviors are completely normal, even if they don’t always feel that way in the moment.

So if you’ve ever gone down a Google rabbit hole over something your dog did… this one’s for you.

🐶 Behavior #1: Eating Grass

It might look odd, but many dogs eat grass from time to time — and it’s usually nothing to worry about. Some do it out of curiosity, boredom, or simply because they like the taste. As long as it’s occasional and not paired with frequent vomiting, it’s generally considered normal.

🐶 Behavior #2: Sleeping A Lot

Dogs sleep a lot more than we do: often 12–14 hours a day (sometimes more).

Puppies and senior dogs especially need extra rest.

If your dog is still alert and active when awake, all that sleeping is just part of being a dog.

🐶 Behavior #3: Random Zoomies

Those sudden bursts of energy (aka zoomies) might look chaotic, but they’re actually a normal way for dogs to release pent-up energy. They often happen after baths, during playtime, or at completely random times. It’s weird… but it’s a good kind of weird.

🐶 Behavior #4: Sniffing Everything on Walks

If your dog wants to stop every few steps to sniff, they’re not being difficult! They’re doing what dogs do. Sniffing is how dogs explore the world. To them, it’s like catching up on everything that’s happened in the neighborhood.

🐶 Behavior #5: Shedding (Even When It Feels Excessive)

Shedding can feel never-ending, especially during seasonal changes. But for most dogs, it’s completely normal. Regular brushing can help manage it, but shedding itself usually isn’t a concern unless you notice bald spots or skin irritation.

For When You Start Overthinking

Dogs can be weird. That’s part of what makes them great. And while a lot of their behaviors can seem concerning at first, many of them are completely normal once you understand them.

That said, if something ever feels off, it’s always worth paying attention. It’s better to be a little paranoid and check in when needed than to ignore something important. Your dog can’t tell you when something’s wrong, so your instincts matter. 🐶💛
